For a knocked-out permanent tooth, seek urgent dental care and keep the tooth moist. Handle it by the crown rather than the root. If it cannot be safely returned to the socket, place it in milk or an ADA-accepted tooth-preservation product while arranging care. Follow the ADA’s dental emergency guidance and contact a dentist immediately.

Unless there is a facial trauma, broken jaw, or life threatening injury, it’s better to contact your emergency dentist for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for trouble breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or another life-threatening emergency. If you cannot reach a dentist and need immediate care, seek appropriate emergency assistance rather than waiting for a return call.
