An oral cancer screening is a visual and hands-on examination of the mouth and nearby tissues for changes that may require further evaluation. It can be completed during a routine dental visit and does not diagnose cancer by itself.

What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening?

Your dentist or dental hygienist may examine the face, neck, lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, roof and floor of the mouth, and the back of the throat. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research explains that the examination is painless, takes only a few minutes, and can be performed during a regular dental checkup. If an area looks or feels unusual, the next step may be monitoring it, arranging additional testing, or referring you to an appropriate specialist. A screening is not a substitute for follow-up when a concerning change is found.
