Cosmetic dentistry includes several approaches to planning and improving a smile. A newer technique is not automatically the right choice. These five areas are useful to discuss with your dentist when comparing options.
1. Digital previews
Photographs and digital planning tools can help patients describe preferences and understand possible changes. A simulation is a communication aid, not a promise of the final result. Ask how the preview relates to the condition of your teeth and bite.
2. Conservative tooth preparation
Preserving healthy tooth structure is an important consideration. Bonding, whitening, or orthodontics may be alternatives to veneers in some cases. The amount of preparation needed depends on the tooth and the intended change.
3. Clear aligners
Aligners can move teeth according to a prescribed plan. They require consistent wear and monitoring. Braces or other approaches may be more suitable for a particular bite, so compare options after an orthodontic assessment.
4. Natural-looking restorative materials
The shade, shape, and surface of a restoration can be selected to suit nearby teeth. Material choices also depend on strength, available tooth structure, and bite forces. Ask about maintenance and future repairs.
5. Attention to gum contours
Gum position influences the appearance of a smile. An examination can determine whether a concern relates to gum health, tooth position, or another cause. Gum treatment should be planned around health and function as well as appearance.
Choose a plan, not a trend
