Root canal treatment is performed by general dentists and endodontists. An endodontist is a dentist with additional training focused on the dental pulp, root canal system, and tissues around the roots. The right provider depends on the diagnosis, the tooth’s anatomy, and the clinician’s experience.

When can a general dentist provide treatment?

Many general dentists perform root canals as part of their practice. Your dentist evaluates whether a case is appropriate to treat in the office or whether specialist assessment would be helpful. The decision may depend on the location of the tooth, its roots, previous treatment, and other clinical findings.

Why might I be referred to an endodontist?

A referral may be useful for complex anatomy, persistent symptoms, a previously treated tooth, an injury, or uncertainty about the source of pain. Endodontists also evaluate whether retreatment or endodontic surgery could help preserve a tooth.

What about cosmetic dentists and oral surgeons?

A dentist who offers cosmetic services may also provide root canals, depending on their training and practice. “Cosmetic dentist” does not identify the specialist responsible for root canal care. Oral surgeons primarily provide surgical treatment such as extractions; an oral-surgery referral should not be assumed to replace an endodontic evaluation.

Is every root canal oral surgery?

Conventional root canal treatment is usually performed through an opening in the tooth. Endodontic surgery is a separate approach used in selected cases. Ask which procedure is being recommended and why.

What happens after treatment?

The tooth generally needs a suitable final restoration. Your dentist will explain whether a filling, crown, or another restoration is appropriate and when it should be completed. Follow the instructions for chewing, cleaning, and follow-up visits, and contact the office if symptoms worsen.

Questions for your appointment

  • What is causing the symptoms?
  • Can this tooth be saved, and what alternatives are reasonable?
  • Would specialist care change the treatment plan?
  • Who will complete the final restoration, and what will it cost?
