An endodontist and an oral surgeon treat different kinds of dental problems. If you have tooth pain or have been told you need treatment, a dental examination can help identify which clinician is appropriate.
When is an endodontist involved?
Endodontists focus on the dental pulp and tissues around tooth roots. They diagnose tooth pain and provide root canal treatment, retreatment, and certain procedures intended to help save natural teeth. A general dentist may refer you for a difficult diagnosis, complex root anatomy, previous root canal treatment, or a dental injury.
When is an oral surgeon involved?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have advanced surgical training involving the mouth, jaws, and face. Their work may include complex extractions, implant placement, and other surgical care. The services appropriate for your case and available at a particular office should be confirmed during consultation.
Is a dental surgeon the same as an oral surgeon?
The phrase “dental surgeon” can be used broadly and does not, by itself, establish specialty training. DDS and DMD are dental degrees. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete additional residency training; some also hold a medical degree. Ask about the clinician’s specific qualifications and experience with your proposed procedure.
Can my regular dentist do a root canal?
General dentists can perform root canal treatment within their training and experience. An endodontist may be recommended when the tooth or diagnosis requires specialist care. A referral does not mean the tooth must be removed. It provides another opportunity to evaluate options for preserving it.
What if extraction or an implant is being considered?
Ask whether the tooth can be restored, what its outlook is, and how the alternatives compare. Root canal treatment and extraction address different situations. If removal is appropriate, discuss replacement options, healing, maintenance, and costs before deciding on an implant, bridge, or denture.
