Bone Grafting & Dental Implants With Bone Loss in Los Angeles

Clinically reviewed by Dr. Michael Issakharian, DDS

Bone loss does not automatically end the implant conversation. An examination and appropriate imaging help determine whether grafting, a different implant design, or a non-implant alternative should be considered.

Why does the bone assessment matter?

Implants need an appropriate supporting site, with nearby structures considered during planning. Ask your clinician to show you the proposed position on your imaging and explain what limits the available space. A previous statement that you have “not enough bone” is useful history, but it is not a complete current treatment plan.

Bone grafting and ridge augmentation

Ridge augmentation adds bone or graft material where the jaw ridge needs development for the planned implant. Depending on the site, grafting may be performed separately or with implant placement. Ask which graft material is proposed, where it comes from, and what healing milestones will be checked before proceeding.

When is a sinus lift discussed?

A sinus lift is considered for selected upper back-tooth sites where the sinus and available bone affect implant placement. It develops space for bone beneath the sinus. The timing of implant placement depends on the individual procedure and the existing support; an extra healing stage may be needed.

Advanced options for complex cases

Cal Dental Group offers evaluation across implant options, including complex bone-loss cases. Ask whether short or narrow implants, a different full-arch design, or specialized approaches such as zygomatic or subperiosteal implants are appropriate. These require specific planning and are not substitutes for a full assessment. The consultation should explain the relevant clinician, risks, alternatives, and maintenance requirements.

Bring your previous records

Prior scans, extraction dates, grafting history, and implant records can help the team understand what has changed. Share your medication list, including medicines used for osteoporosis or cancer. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own; your clinicians should coordinate any changes.

Questions patients ask

Does every implant require a bone graft?

No. Grafting is considered when needed for the proposed treatment and site.

How long does grafting add?

Some grafts require a separate healing period of several months. Ask for your expected sequence and the findings that will determine readiness for the next step.

Can I avoid grafting?

There may be alternatives, including a different implant or restoration design or a conventional denture or bridge. Each has its own limitations; suitability must be assessed.
