A cosmetic dentist helps patients evaluate changes to the appearance of their teeth and smile. Care begins with an examination, because tooth decay, gum disease, and bite problems can affect which treatments are suitable.

Services you may discuss

Whitening changes the shade of natural teeth. Bonding can repair selected chips or reshape tooth edges. Veneers cover the front surfaces of teeth, while crowns provide more extensive coverage when a tooth needs restoration. Orthodontic care changes tooth position. Replacing missing teeth may involve bridges, dentures, or implants.

These options are not interchangeable. A procedure that improves appearance may also serve a restorative purpose, and some concerns can be addressed with less involved treatment.

How do you evaluate a provider?

Ask about the dentist’s education and experience with the procedure being considered. Request examples that are relevant to your situation and shared with patient permission. “Cosmetic dentist” is a description of services, not proof of a separate specialty qualification.

Questions about safety and maintenance

  • How much healthy tooth structure would be altered?
  • What risks or sensitivity should I understand?
  • What would happen if I postponed treatment?
  • Could a more conservative option meet my goals?
  • What cleaning, repairs, and future replacement may be needed?

Technology can support planning, but it does not eliminate clinical risks or guarantee an outcome. Ask the dentist to explain how any proposed imaging or technique affects your own treatment.
